The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs are proud to announce that one of the Club's greatest-ever players will be honoured in the new Centre of Excellence, with the official naming of the Steve Mortimer Boardroom.
With the Centre of Excellence set to be opened in the first half of 2027, the Boardroom will overlook the famous Belmore Sports Ground turf – the very place where 'Turvey’ Mortimer starred week-in, week-out to become a Club legend and icon of rugby league.
Steve Mortimer Boardroom Announced
Mortimer, who recently celebrated his 70th birthday, received the news on Friday afternoon whilst watching the NRL side complete their Captain’s Run ahead of their Round 20 clash against the Wests Tigers.
A Member of the Club’s Hall of Fame, Steve Mortimer (Bulldog no.413), won four Premierships – captaining two – and played all of his 273 first-grade games in Blue and White.
Joining the Club in 1976, the clever halfback owned the no.7 jersey for thirteen seasons, proving to be the backbone of the side alongside brothers Peter and Chris through an unparalleled era of success that cemented the Bulldogs as ‘The Family Club’.
A natural leader, 'Turvey’ guided the Bulldogs to back-to-back Premiership victories in 1984-85 and became the first captain to lead New South Wales to the first State of Origin series victory - and three-game sweep - in 1985.
The Best of Steve Mortimer
Notably, Mortimer became a key figure off the field at the turn of the century, holding a position as CEO of the Bulldogs between 2002 and 2004, where he oversaw the 2004 Premiership while also navigating the Club through a turbulent period.
He was also a Board member of the Canterbury League Club for almost two decades, as well as the Football Club from 2014-2019.
And now, Mortimer will be forever immortalised in the Bulldogs’ Centre of Excellence at Belmore.
"There are few names that mean more to this Club than Steve Mortimer's,” CEO Aaron Warburton said.
“Steve led us in every room he ever walked into - a one-club Bulldog and Premiership-winning captain, the man who captained New South Wales to its first Origin series win, and later the CEO who steadied Canterbury-Bankstown when the Club needed him most.
That's a career defined by leadership, so it's only fitting the honour is a Boardroom - the room where our Club's biggest decisions are made.
“As we build the next chapter of our history at the Centre of Excellence, his name will stand right at the heart of it."
