The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs would like to today offer their sincere condolences to the Nelson family after the passing of former club stalwart Barry ‘Punchy’ Nelson at the age of 89.

Barry was an enormous part of the Bulldogs family.

Joining Canterbury in 1950 as a second rower, Barry played in 61 First Grade matches between 1954 and 1961.

In addition, he played one game for NSW in 1960, where he unfortunately suffered a broken jaw.
During the 1980s, Nelson became club president of the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.

It was during that time that he and secretary Peter Moore, oversaw a very successful period that yielded 4 premierships. He was club president from 1982-2002.

Barry was a Life Member of the Club and in 2004, he was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.

In addition, he was a long standing member of the police force during his playing career.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Nelson family at this time.
