Academy Wrap Round 3: Dual Wins Over Roosters

It was another memorable week for our Pathways sides, with the Harold Matthews Cup and SG Ball Cup sides getting up against the Central Coast Roosters.

In Round 4, all four sides will take on the South Sydney Rabbitohs, with the Mens teams heading to Redfern Oval and the Womens teams hosting at Hammondville Oval.

Harold Matthews Cup: Bulldogs 28 def CC Roosters 22

It was a close call for the Harold Matthews Cup Bulldogs, who pried victory from the jaws of defeat against the Central Coast Roosters at McCredie Park in Guildford.

Down 22-12 at the break, the Bulldogs stormed home in the second half, keeping their opponents scoreless while running in three tries.

Winger Oka Chan Kum Tong bagged a double, while halfback Ezekiel Stanley-Ligaiviu scored twelve of the side's points with two tries and two goals.

Head Coach Mark O'Meley was proud of the turnaround, highlighting the side's grit, resilience and character.

"It was a true game of two halves, with momentum swinging throughout the contest," he said.

The boys were forced to dig deep early, they stayed composed and worked their way back in the contest with discipline and controlled possession.

"As the match wore on, their ability to build pressure and manage momentum proved decisive. It was a gritty win built on character and belief."

SG Ball Cup: Bulldogs 44 def CC Roosters 30

It was a high-scoring match for the SG Ball side in their Round 3 match, outgunning the Roosters 44-30 at McCredie Park.

The Blue and Whites got off to a strong start, with a 26-8 half-time lead thanks to tries to Paul Johnston, David Bryenton, Marcellus Iakopo, Elsiyah Laumatia and Jope Rauqe.

Their opponents clawed their way back, however, even taking the lead with fifteen minutes remaining, before a flurry of three tries in five minutes sealed the result in the dying stages.

Head Coach Steve Turner acknowledged that while there is still plenty of improvement on his team, the victory was a solid foundation to build their season on.

"It was a very good win over the Central Coast," he said.

"We set the tone early with strong defence, high completions, and good field position. The boys stayed composed whenever momentum shifted.

"There's still a lot to work on, but the effort and connection across the team was excellent and a great platform to build on."
