Budget Like a Bulldog: Holy Spirit Catholic College Students Learn the Money Game

Money lessons don’t usually come with a view of the footy field, but at Belmore Sports Ground, they do.

Students from Holy Spirit Catholic College, Lakemba are swapping textbooks for real-world tools in the Bulldogs Game-Changers Financial Literacy Course.

Delivered inside the iconic home of the Bulldogs, the course blends financial education with insight from people who live it. Players, staff, and guest speakers from the finance world drop in to share honest stories about money, decision-making, and lessons learned along the way.

General Manager of Stakeholder Engagement, Diane Langmack OAM left a lasting impression after taking time out of her busy schedule to speak on the importance of financial literacy to students.

Designed to be practical and engaging, the program helps students make sense of everyday money matters. Bulldogs staff, players, and financial experts work together to empower the next generation with relatable examples and real conversations.

The course gives students essential skills that will serve them long after graduation. Knowing how to manage a budget, understand wages, make informed spending choices, understand consumer rights, and plan for long-term financial goals.

Topics range from everyday expenses and digital banking to superannuation, investing, and common financial pitfalls. Each session is structured to build early financial awareness and encourage independent thinking.

General Manager of Stakeholder Engagement, Diane Langmack OAM, explained the vision behind the initiative:

We know that financial literacy is a key life skill. The earlier young people understand how money works, the more confident and capable they become," Langmack explained.

"This program helps students build a mindset around responsibility and planning. It’s about more than knowledge, it’s about empowerment."

Thanks to the support of Abal Banking, sessions are highly interactive and practical. Whether it’s mapping out how to save for a first car or unpacking the hidden costs of a mortgage, students are encouraged to ask questions, explore options, and reflect on their own financial habits.

Following his appearance as guest speaker, CEO of Arab Bank Australia (abal banking) Dr Joseph Rizk AM described;

“Arab Bank Australia (abal banking) are very proud of their long standing partnership with the Bulldogs. What is inspiring to us is that the Club is not just focused on the game, it is focused on making a difference where it can and among the broader community.

Abal Banking focuses heavily on nurturing and growing the skill sets of our youth among all different areas including sports, music and the arts. When the Bulldogs approached us with the Game Changers initiative, for us it was simple, we had to be involved.

"What a wonderful initiative for the youth in our schools and colleges being able to learn life skills that they wouldn’t necessarily learn in the classroom.”

By equipping young people with real-world financial skills and delivering it in a way that’s inspiring, the Bulldogs Game-Changers program is helping shape confident, capable leaders for tomorrow.
