Matt Burton kicks off on the first-ever NRL match to be played in Bundaberg for Premiership points (August, 2022).

In a heartwarming display of unity and inclusion, the Walk With Me 4 Autism All Abilities Rugby League team is set to take centre stage as the curtain raiser for the much-anticipated NRL Premiership Round 22 match between the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and the Dolphins. 

The event will mark the first time the Bulldogs and the Dolphins face off in NRL history, making the occasion all the more special. The match will once again take place at Salter Oval in Bundaberg, Queensland, on a date that promises to be etched in the rugby league books as a day that celebrates community, diversity, and the beauty of inclusive sportsmanship. 

The decision to have the Walk With Me 4 Autism All Abilities Rugby League featured as the curtain raiser for the Bulldogs' regional home match again in 2023 exemplifies the Clubs' unwavering commitment to being the 'Family Club' and creating opportunities for inclusivity and diversity across the game at all levels.

Bulldogs CEO, Aaron Warburton expressed his excitement about this unique opportunity and the message it conveys to the broader community.

Having the Walk With Me 4 Autism All Abilities Rugby League play as the curtain raiser for our Round 22 match is a testament to our dedication to creating a culture that is inclusive for all. We are thrilled to share the field with these incredible athletes and showcase their passion and talent for the game.

The Walk With Me 4 Autism All Abilities Rugby League program is in its’ second year and offers kids and adults with special needs to enjoy the game in a fun and supportive environment. It was established by two local Gin Gin mums in Sonya Olsen and Judy Fenn, both of whom will be at Salter Oval come Sunday, July 30 when two groups of the programs’ players take the field to play and demonstrate love and passion they have for the sport. 

Their participation in a high-profile NRL event amplifies their hard work and dedication, shining a spotlight on the importance of providing equal opportunities for athletes of all backgrounds and abilities. 

The Bulldogs' CEO further emphasised, "It's not just about the game; it's about the message of acceptance and understanding. We want to inspire our fans, young and old, to embrace diversity and see the beauty in differences. Sport has the power to break down barriers, and we hope this curtain raiser sets an example for others to follow, not only in rugby league but across all sports. By hosting this curtain raiser match, and the match in Bundaberg, we hope we can provide the opportunity for so many families to come together and build core memories."

Salter Oval, which is now iconic for sporting the regions' first NRL match to be played for points last year in August, will once again serve as the perfect backdrop for this exemplary event. With its vibrant rugby league culture and enthusiastic fanbase, the stadium is expected to come alive with excitement and anticipation as both the All Abilities Rugby League players and the Bulldogs and Dolphins take to the field. 

As the date approaches, travelling fans and local members of the community are being encouraged to come together and witness this remarkable display of talent and inclusivity. It will be a day to celebrate the spirit of sport and support athletes of all abilities, truly highlighting the potential rugby league has to unite. 

One match for the All Abilities participants will take place behind closed doors before gates open, and the second, curtain-raising Walk With Me 4 Autism All Abilities Rugby League game will kick-off at 12:00pm. Undoubtedly, the two games will provide be a cherished memory for all involved, leaving an indelible mark on Bundaberg's rugby league history and inspiring generations to come.
