2019 Young Australian of the Year, Baker Boy (Danzal Baker) will headline the pre-show performance at the NRL Harvey Norman All-Stars in Melbourne.
The Darwin-born rapper is the first Indigenous artist to achieve mainstream success rapping in the Yolngu Matha language and will showcase his unique sound in between the women’s and men’s matches at AAMI Park on Friday 15 February.
Baker Boy said he was looking forward to seeing the All-Stars players in action.
“For me, performing at the All-Stars is a really important opportunity that I’m proud of,” he said.
“I’m so proud to be repping and warming up the crowd to get them hyped.
“I’ve had a look at the teams, and they look deadly. I do love New Zealand, but I’m backing my Indigenous brothers and sisters.”
NRL Chief Commercial Officer, Andrew Abdo said the All-Stars build-up was much more than just the men’s and women’s matches.
“This is one of the most unique and memorable sporting events in Australia, and we’re delighted to announce that one of the most impressive, contemporary young artists in the country in Baker Boy will be part of the occasion.”
Touring Australia extensively following his continued rise to prominence, Baker Boy is using his voice to inspire young people in remote Indigenous communities and encouraging them to embrace their culture and take up leadership positions.
The NRL Harvey Norman All-Stars matches will be played between both men’s and women’s Australian Indigenous All-Stars and New Zealand Maori Kiwis sides.
Tickets are on sale now, with NRL club member adult tickets starting at $20 and family passes from $45.
