The news of CEO Todd Greenberg resigning and moving on to the Head of Football role with the NRL came as a shock yesterday but I must admit I m not overly surprised. I sent both him and Dave Smith an email last night to congratulate them both on what was a good day for the game.
What Todd has done at the Bulldogs has been remarkable. When he first came into the position the Club was near breaking-point and he turned it all around and reinvigorated the Club. The brand had been tarnished and he has successfully got it to a great place. I believe Todds story is a great case-study of how to turn around a club.
Todd has outgrown running just one Club, I think he is better suited now to be in the position of handling whole of game issues, he will be a great asset in at NRL headquarters as he has done is time at a Club and understands the issues that everyone across the game deals with every day.
From all of my dealings with Todd over the years I must say that what stands out for me is that he has a high level of integrity and is extremely trustworthy. Personally, when I was dealing with my retirement announcement etc. he was always open and honest with me and I knew the discussions we had were always just between him and I. The way in which he recruited Des was also of note and the fact that yesterdays announcement caught everyone off-guard shows how trustworthy he is.
His departure wont see much change on the field with what Des is wanting to achieve. Des is very professional and has everything well structured. Over the past 12-18 months Todd has moved into a facilitation type role in relation to football where he is behind the other side of the business that is giving Des and his football team the chance to build and deliver a first-class football program off the back of good sales in merchandise and sponsorship as well as membership. That is what the person who takes the position will need to do, theyll need to continue to deliver on those things to allow football the opportunity to perform at their best.
My old mate James Graham will be back next week (Rnd 8) and I cant wait to see him back in action. He wont be the answer to the tough start that the playing group have had to the year but I can guarantee you one thing, hell bring a big heart. His attitude is contagious and whilst you can be given a game plan and strategy, you cant be given a bigger heart and his is as big as anyones. The attitude he brings in contagious and I know a lot of the group will enjoy having him back.
