Debutant Brad Abbey fulfilled his childhood dream last weekend when he made his NRL debut against the New Zealand Warriors in Dunedin.
The 20 year old Abbey, who hails from New Zealand, slotted into the fullback position after a fractured eye socket had sidelined incumbent Will Hopoate.
The Bulldogs took their Round three home game to Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin and walked away with their first victory of the season, after defeating the Warriors by 12 points and for fullback Abbey, it was a “surreal experience” playing for the Bulldogs so early in the season:
“I was happy to be out there and to be playing my first game in New Zealand was a bonus as well”, said Abbey.
“It was awesome; it was a dream come true. Ever since I was a little kid I have always wanted to be out there. It was a surreal experience.”
Abbey expressed how he wishes to improve on a weekly basis and grab every opportunity he can:
“Learning from my mistakes and growing my game hopefully I get more games under my belt and improve week in week out.”
Coach Des Hasler has named Abbey in the fullback position for Saturday afternoon’s game against the Manly Sea Eagles. This will provide Abbey with another opportunity to impress and having the support from his family there will be a bonus:
“It will be good because my family will actually be there this time. I think it will put a bit more pressure on myself with them being there, but it will be good and I can’t wait. They’re a good side [Manly Sea Eagles]. They had a good win over the North Queensland Cowboys last weekend, as well, and I’m sure both sides will come out firing.”
The Bulldogs will be looking to register their second win of the season against the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles on Saturday afternoon. The match starts at 4-30 pm.
