The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs will celebrate the multicultural heritage of players and supporters by wearing a jersey bearing flags of countries from around the world during their round 23 game against the Manly Sea Eagles at ANZ Stadium this Thursday night.

The jersey design was inspired by a ‘diversity audit’ of Bulldogs members which revealed that 44% are of multicultural heritage and also by the rich mix of cultures amongst Bulldogs players and staff.

The diversity audit also prompted the Bulldogs to make social inclusion a pillar of the club’s community programme.

As a result the Bulldogs have:

· Implemented the ‘Brydens Membership Programme’ – a donation of  500 family memberships to newly arrived migrants and other socially disadvantaged families

· Turned Belmore Sports Ground into an after school ‘drop in’ centre for youth at risk of social isolation

· Developed the ‘Be All In’ programme for refugee and migrant families in conjunction with Western Sydney University, it promotes sport and education as a way of assimilating for students at high needs schools in south west Sydney.

· Created signage at Bulldogs games welcoming fans in languages other than English

· Made translations available for Membership and Corporate Partnership Information on the Bulldogs website

· Printed a ‘newcomers’ brochure in different languages which aims to provide basic information on who the Bulldogs are and what they do for anyone interested in following a Rugby League team to help their assimilation process

“We’re incredibly proud of the way so many different cultures are united by the Bulldogs jersey and we’ll be celebrating the respect and tolerance it promotes during our game on Thursday night,” said Bulldogs CEO Raelene Castle.

“At the Bulldogs we are very aware that sport has a power to unite people in a way that not much else can.”
