Bulldogs.com.au takes a snapshot look back at White Ribbon Day through Miller, Bankstown and Lakemba.
The Bulldogs spent the morning with over 300 people supporting the White Ribbon March and Gala day in Miller.
The initiative is part of the Bulldogs commitment to work with Liverpool City Council and supporting violence prevention programs.
Sam Perrett was on deck at the Liverpool White Ribbon March and highlighted the impact of violence against women.
“We are supporting the march today because so far this year, Liverpool recoded 966 domestic related assault which is above the NSW average,” said Perrett.
“This equates to 3 domestic assaults reported each day in Liverpool.
“This is concerning for the whole of community and it makes us proud to see all the men in the local area join the march and send a strong message that violence against women is never acceptable”
What is the local impact of domestic related assaults in the Canterbury-Bankstown, Liverpool, Auburn Area?
· 2660 domestic related incidents per year . That’s nearly 7 DV Assaults per day across our catchment! Number of domestic related incidents (this is only physical assault and doesn’t include other forms of abuse)
· This figure has been consistent over the last 3 years
· Bankstown is above the NSW average and is ranked 60th out of 155 Local Government Area in NSW
· Canterbury is below the NSW average and is ranked 84th out of 155 Local Government Area in NSW
· Liverpool is above the NSW average and is ranked 50th out of 155 Local Government Area in NSW
· Auburn is below the NSW average and is ranked 72nd out of 155 Local Government Area in NSW
The afternoon was spent with local businesses, schools, community and Government organisations in Bankstown at the John Mckay Indoor Centre competing foir the Bankstown White Ribbon Tug O’ War Cup, before ending the day at the Lakemba White Ribbon March.
The entire first grade squad, coaching and administration staff were on hand, joining members from local organisations and the general public to eliminate violence against women and children.
Domestic violence is a critical issue for the Canterbury-Bankstown district with an average of five assaults per day.
NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione, The Hon. Mr Tony Burke were also in attendance, where prop forward Aiden Tolman read the White Ribbon oath, to kick start the walk.
“All the boys, CEO, Coach and staff have embraced the White Ribbon partnership,” Tolman said. “We work in this area and we are well aware of the struggles and stats associated with domestic violence.
“It’s about standing up and saying that it’s unacceptable to be violent towards woman and children. If we can stop one incident from happening, then we are making a difference.
“This is our second year and the event has grown, which is great to see with more of the community getting involved.”
