Last week it was announced that halfback Trent Hodkinson would leave the club on a three-year deal with the Newcastle Knights and Coach Des Hasler today spoke about the decision.
Hodkinson will depart the club at season’s end and whilst disappointed he couldn’t strike a deal with the Cabramatta junior, Hasler discussed the strain of the salary cap as the reasoning behind the departure.
“It’s the salary cap, it’s the salary cap isn’t it,” Hasler said.
“For any player to sign a new contract, it’s an exciting time. Trent is not only a fantastic footballer, he’s a terrific person.
“He’s worked really hard on all aspects. I know the club, and myself are really happy for him.”
After steering the New South Wales side around the park for the past two series, Hasler noted that it was probably the main part of his game that would be missed with his departure.
“Probably what has been commented on previously. His ability to steer teams around.
“He’s a very competent goal kicker as well but that’s what happens in rugby league, you can’t keep them all.”
Hodkinson has made 85 appearances in the blue and white since debuting for the club back in 2011 and after the disappointment of the Grand Final loss last season, the 26-year-old will be here steering the side around the park hoping to go one better in 2015.
