Special Surprise at Chalmers Road

When given the opportunity to visit the kids at Chalmers Road School in Strathfield, it gave me an insight on what a school like this does, but also an appreciation of how we at the Bulldogs make an impact in people’s lives.
Chalmers Rd School in Strathfield is a school that caters for students aged four to eighteen years with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities, so when a request came through to attend the surprise 18th birthday party of the school captain Fadi - we jumped at the chance.
There is nothing more satisfying as a rugby league player than putting a smile on a kids face and having an impact on a child’s life that has a disability.
Fadi himself is a beloved Bulldogs fan and his favourite player is Ben Barba, so for us to attend his birthday was something special and one that he will remember forever. Accompanied by his mum and his brother it’s fair to say Fadi certainly was surprised when he saw us walk through the classroom door and the smile on his face was from ear-to-ear.
In true celebration the school had put on quite the party for Fadi with birthday banners, balloons and fairy bread and it was clear that the kids were enjoying themselves.
Fadi will graduate this year from school and when you speak to the teachers of Chalmers Road they cannot speak highly enough of him and they all say he is an inspiration to all the students at the school.
Speaking of inspiration, these kids are inspiring! Visiting a school like this really puts things into perspective and I must take my hat off to the teachers who apply themselves to these kids with a wide variety of disabilities in such a manor that needs to be recognised.
The program the school has for these children is amazing and one that has a wide variety of subjects and learnings involved.
It sure will be a day I won’t forget, because as a father you really appreciate what you have and how lucky I am!
