Holden Cup Too Strong for Rabbitohs
Friday 23 August 2013 6:58 PM
The Holden Cup side have again put in a dominant performance winning 48-24 against the Rabbitohs at ANZ Stadium this afternoon.
It was nine tries to five at the completion of 80 minutes with the Bulldogs going to the break leading 34-10.
With the NSW Cup side having the bye this weekend Coach Andy Patmore had the opportunity to bring both John Sila and Moses Mbye back into the side.
After coming off a massive victory against the Raiders last weekend the young pups started in the same fashion with Sila crossing in the sixth minute of play. With Mbye playing in the centres it gave the Bulldogs an extra ball player and when he got the ball into his hands he got it quickly out to Sila who crossed in the north-western corner. Fullback Patrick Templeman converted from out wide to give the Bulldogs a 6-nil lead.
Six minutes later it was Dujuan Liolevave on the opposite wing who crossed on the end of a slick backline movement. It was shifted quickly and when Templeman received the ball out the back he then drew in the defence and threw a long ball out to Liolevave who went over in the north-eastern corner. Templeman couldn’t convert with the lead left out to 10-nil.
The Rabbitohs answered back soon after off the back of a penalty. It was a set move that saw prop forward Daniel Smith run a smart line back on the inside and once he received the ball he slipped straight through and went over to score. Centre Aaron Gray converted to reduce the lead and score to 10-6.
Penalties on back to back sets gave the Bulldogs commanding field position and on both occasions some great attacking options from the side saw Lloyd Perrett cross for two tries in three minutes. Templeman converted both to extend the lead out to 22-6 after 26 minutes of play.
The Bulldogs were on a roll and they crossed for their fifth try of the afternoon just four minutes later. A Rabbitohs error gifted the side possession and again a shift to the right saw Liolevave go over in the right hand corner. Templeman beautifully converted from the sideline to leave the scoreboard reading 28-6.
The Rabbitohs crossed to reduce the score but Sila replied straight back cancelling it out and giving the Bulldogs a 34-10 lead going into the break.
An early error from the Rabbitohs in the second half gave the Bulldogs the ball in great field position. From there and on tackle one the ball was again sent to the left and Sila crossed, registering his hat-trick. Templeman couldn’t convert with the score now 38-10.
Two further tries were scored by the Bulldogs with Blake Carte burrowing over from dummy-half and then Liolevave registering his hat-trick soon after.
Templeman converted one of those with the Bulldogs leading 48-10.
The Bulldogs seemed to have switched off in the closing 10 minutes with the Rabbitohs crossing for three tries in that period. Patmore will look at the finish and be sure to make his side concentrate for the entire 80 minutes.
